Breakfast, the Costa Rican way

Good mornings start with gallo pinto

Breakfast is traditional Costa Rican, cooked in the house by Marisol, our in-house cook. At its heart is gallo pinto: rice and black beans fried together with onion, sweet pepper and cilantro, seasoned with Salsa Lizano.

It's typically served with eggs, fried sweet plantains, fresh cheese or natilla (sour cream), corn tortillas and tropical fruit, alongside Costa Rican coffee, a fresh local juice and water.

The setting

A lagoon inside a volcano

Laguna del Hule is the largest of three lakes in a volcanic crater on Costa Rica's northern slope. It is protected, along with Laguna Congo and the smaller Laguna Bosque Alegre, by the Bosque Alegre Wildlife Refuge, created in 1994.

From the lookout, the lagoon is a deep emerald bowl ringed by forested crater walls. A trail drops through rainforest to the shoreline, where toucans, howler and white-faced monkeys and, with luck, a sloth may appear.

The refuge sits between the Central Volcanic Range and the Caribbean lowlands of Sarapiquí, which puts cloud-forest waterfalls, river adventures and chocolate farms within reach of one base.

Casa Bosque Alegre is about 10 minutes from the refuge, and the crater kayak and hike is the first of our signature tours.
